Herk Siang graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Sociology in 2006. He went on to complete his Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Merit) with the National Institute of Education and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Social Studies with NIE.

During his undergraduate years at NUS, Herk Siang was an active volunteer and mentor to youths in The Student Mentorship Programme, a joint project of the National University of Singapore Society, the National University of Singapore, South West Community Development Council and Students Care Service. His passion in working with teenagers is also evident in his teaching career, having been a recipient of the Caring Teacher Award in 2010.

Prior to joining SOTA, Herk Siang taught English Language and Social Studies at secondary school level. He also assisted in the crafting of overseas learning packages as well as lesson packages in the Humanities and had participated in overseas cohort expeditions to Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia. In 2008, Herk Siang was awarded the Outstanding Contribution Award (Individual Category). Having been a teacher-in-charge for the school Student Council, Herk Siang believes that everyone is a leader in their own way. In 2011, Herk Siang led the student leaders on a leadership camp to Tanjung Leman, Malaysia.

Herk Siang is also a member of the Singapore Association for Social Studies Education and he advocates a strong education in Humanities. In their pursuit of the arts, SOTA students will definitely be immersed in culture from all over the world. Herk Siang firmly believes that the Arts and Humanities are closely intertwined and is dedicated in promoting his cause.
