Graced by Guest-of-Honour, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA), Mr. Lui Tuck Yew, the inaugural biennial 3-day SOTA Arts in Education Forum (AEF) 2010 held at the new SOTA city campus on 7 – 9 April 2010 sought to address some of the current advocacy issues on the arts in education and the different approaches for using the arts in pedagogy in the 21st century.
Themed Arts in Education: Teaching and Learning through the Arts, AEF 2010 focussed primarily on:
- Education in the world today – literacies and competencies for the innovation and conceptual age;
- Relevance of the arts in education – developing and harnessing dispositions and attitudes for the innovation and conceptual age;
- The Educator – Arts in education in the classroom.
Three distinguished keynote speakers addressed the future of the arts in education and the thought leadership from different perspectives. SOTA educators shared about the unique SOTA Education Experience and arts educators from Singapore schools were invited to share their best practices. MICA and the Singapore National Commission for UNESCO also gave support for this forum. In line with the school’s corporate social responsibility, a forum bag was commissioned for production with VillageWorks, an organisation conceived by Girls’ Brigade Singapore and dedicated to the purpose of creating employment, and providing skills and livelihood to women and young people in third world countries.
Principal of SOTA, Mrs Rebecca Chew shared the inspiration behind the forum, “We believe that we need to set aside time to make time and good sense of our own work; to be refreshed, and have the strength to live and teach with the passion of the artist in all our thinking systems. What is exciting is that the connected curriculum in the 21st century is one of the more significant pathways into generating deeper meaning for purposeful teaching and learning. The Medici effect of galvanising a diverse community of educators, artists, specialists and practioners is indeed the starting point of our aspirations for a more holistic approach to the arts in education.”
Feedback from the forum participants illustrated the forum’s objectives. One of the participants commented, “I particularly enjoyed (the sessions by) the keynote speakers who brought forward many interesting thoughts and provoking ideas.”
“It is timely for a teacher to experience this and get recharged to avoid career burn out,” shared another.
Affirmative of the insights gained and enthusiasm garnered from three days of reflecting upon the arts in education, participants rendered areas of exploration for the next forum theme in 2012. As one well suggested, “SOTA could facilitate more learning and sharing of how to create an environment for “learning from failure for failed projects” and for self-directed exploration & learning by the students.”
